Shingles

Owens Corning Architectural Shingles in Knoxville: what Duration is and what the warranty needs.

Duration is Owens Corning's best-known architectural shingle. Here is what the maker says it does, which warranty is which, and what has to be true on your roof for the bigger numbers to apply.

What are architectural shingles?

Architectural shingles are the dimensional asphalt shingle most Knoxville re-roofs use today. They are made to look thicker and more textured than a flat shingle. Owens Corning sells several lines of them, and Duration is the one most homeowners hear about first. If you are still deciding between shingles and metal, start with the shingle vs. metal comparison. This page assumes you are already leaning shingle and want to know what you are being quoted.

What is Owens Corning Duration?

Per Owens Corning's Duration Series page, Duration shingles feature patented SureNail Technology, which the company says is designed to help provide outstanding gripping power and installation confidence. The series includes Duration itself plus up to seven other Duration styles, depending on where you live. The TruDefinition Duration version is built on a color platform meant to give stronger color contrast and dimension.

The performance figures Owens Corning publishes for the series are:

  • Wind: eligible for wind resistance coverage up to 160 MPH. The fine print matters: that applies only when the required Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System components are used and starter shingles are applied on both the eaves and the rakes. Owens Corning's page dates this change to August 1, 2026.
  • Algae resistance: 25 years. The page notes this requires an approved Owens Corning Hip & Ridge shingle product. Owens Corning's StreakGuard protection is described as helping inhibit blue-green algae, the cause of dark streaks.
  • Warranty: a Limited Lifetime Warranty, which Owens Corning defines as covering manufacturing defects for as long as the owner of a single-family detached home owns it.

Two readings of those numbers are wrong. A 160 MPH wind warranty does not mean the roof will survive 160 MPH wind, it means that is the figure the warranty can cover when the installation meets the maker's requirements. And "lifetime" is a manufacturing-defect promise, not a promise the roof never wears out or leaks.

Why does the algae number matter in East Tennessee?

Knoxville gets roughly 48 inches of precipitation a year (see the gutter page for the source), and shaded roofs under trees stay damp. Dark streaking from algae is a cosmetic problem more than a leak problem, but it is the thing neighbors see from the street. An algae-resistance warranty is worth reading for exactly what it requires, since it ties to using the right hip and ridge shingle.

What are the warranty tiers: standard versus extended?

Owens Corning's warranty page separates two kinds of coverage.

  • The standard limited warranty. Anyone can install under it, provided the installation instructions and local building codes are followed.
  • Extended warranties (the System Protection / Total Protection Roofing System, Preferred Protection and Platinum Protection warranties). Owens Corning says only installers in the top two tiers of its contractor network are authorized to provide these, and that they are "authorized, but not obligated" to, so you have to ask for it before the job. The requirements include Hip & Ridge shingles and other accessories, and for Preferred and Platinum Protection, underlayment as well.

Details worth knowing before you sign: every Owens Corning warranty starts with a Tru PROtection period in its initial years that includes labor to repair or replace defective materials. A transfer to the next owner has to be requested inside a 60-day window after the sale, and some warranties carry a transfer fee set in the warranty terms. And a claim requires two full-size installed shingle samples, so have a roofer pull and replace them.

Who installs Owens Corning shingles in Knoxville?

Roof replacements booked through this site use Owens Corning and TAMKO materials. Because extended coverage depends on who installs and what goes on the roof, the useful questions at the estimate are:

  • Which shingle line is being quoted, by name?
  • Which warranty comes with it: the standard limited warranty or an extended one?
  • Are starter shingles going on both eaves and rakes, and which hip and ridge product is being used?
  • Is all of it in the written, itemized estimate before work starts?

Price ranges are on the cost guide, and the order of work is on the replacement timeline. For a specific roof, call (865) 813-8020 for a free estimate.
